Humans and Peregrines

Peregrine Falcons are fiercely territorial and live at least one kilometre away from other pairs, generally more. They will defend their territory against other Peregrine Falcons as well as Eagles and Ravens. If they feel threatened they will attack aggressively with claws outstretched towards the perceived threat, even dogs and humans.

Mankind has used Peregrine Falcons for falconry for over 3000 years, starting in Asia. A very popular bird for hunting, they demonstrate affection in captivity by nibbling your ear and enjoy riding on shoulders or heads and are very loyal to their human companion.

Although some humans see them as a threat such as those who raise racing pigeons, many other people including farmers see them as friends. They have been used to keep other birds away at airports to prevent bird/plane strikes and were used during the Second World War to intercept message carrying homing pigeons.

The gracefulness and speed of a Peregrine Falcon in flight is a sight enjoyed and marvelled at by everyone who sees it. A striking bird in appearance and a deadly hunter, the Peregrine Falcon is indeed a magnificent, skilled raptor and a treasured companion of humans.
